The Nature of Change: Why We Resist It and Why We Need It

Change is as natural as the shifting of seasons, as inevitable as the tide meeting the shore. And yet, for most of us, change is hard. It disrupts our routines, unsettles our sense of control, and often forces us into the unknown. So why, if change is such an inherent part of life, do we resist it so much? And more importantly—what happens when we finally allow ourselves to embrace it?

The Discomfort of Change
At its core, resistance to change is a survival instinct. Our brains are wired to seek comfort, familiarity, and predictability—anything that guarantees our safety. Change, on the other hand, represents uncertainty. It challenges the status quo and forces us into uncharted territory. It asks us to let go of what we know, even if what we know is no longer serving us.

This is why change often feels like loss. The loss of an identity we’ve built, the loss of relationships, the loss of a predictable path. But what if we reframed change? What if, instead of seeing it as an ending, we viewed it as a transformation?

The Necessity of Change
In nature, nothing stays the same for long. Rivers carve new paths, trees shed leaves to make way for new growth, caterpillars surrender to the cocoon to emerge as something entirely new. Growth is not just a possibility—it is the law of life itself. To resist change is to resist evolution.

Yet, in our own lives, we often cling to what is familiar, even when it limits us. We stay in jobs that no longer inspire us, relationships that no longer support us, and mindsets that no longer align with who we are becoming. We tell ourselves we are "stuck" when in reality, we are simply afraid to move.

Allowing Change to Shape Us
What if we stopped fighting change and instead let it work for us? What if we leaned into discomfort, knowing that on the other side of it is a version of ourselves that is stronger, wiser, and more aligned?

Change does not require us to have all the answers. It only asks us to take the next step. It asks us to trust the unfolding, to allow uncertainty to be a guide rather than a threat. When we surrender to change, we stop fearing the unknown and start embracing the possibilities that lie within it.

Perhaps the real question is not "How can I avoid change?" but rather "How can I partner with it?" Because in the end, change is not our enemy—it is the force that shapes us into who we are meant to be.

The next time you feel resistance creeping in, ask yourself: What if this change is not here to break me, but to build me?
