The Power of Money Archetypes
Archetypes are familiar, recurring symbols that can be identified by everyone, regardless of a person’s background, gender, education, or time in history. A good example of this is the archetype of mother. When you think of a mother, you imagine a set of qualities, ones that you would categorize as “good” or “bad.”
Rather than use these labels, archetype work will typically refer to these qualities as light / dark; strengths / shadows; or higher frequency / lower frequency energy. There is no such thing as a bad or good archetype. They all possess qualities aligned with fear-based and love-based thoughts, feelings, and actions. There are many different archetypes and archetype systems, and they have been used throughout the span of human history.
Money archetypes depict qualities associated with our relationship with money. As a certified Money Archetypes coach, I use a system that utilizes eight archetypes.
They are called Accumulator, Alchemist, Celebrity, Connector, Maverick, Nurturer, Romantic, and Ruler.
Learning your money archetypes can provide you with powerful insight into how you operate in the world, not just with money, but with everything. The thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that show up with money also show up in our relationships with ourselves, others, time, health and well-being - even with our dreams.
I have yet to encounter a thorough archetypes system that only utilizes one archetype, since we are not one-dimensional creatures, and the money archetype system I use is no exception. Each person has three money archetypes: one primary with the largest influence, and two secondary archetypes.
This explains why humans rarely make cut-and-dry decisions - part of us believes one thing while part of us believes another!
Accumulator
- Great at being responsible with money, possibly to a fault
- Loves a bargain, maybe too much
- Amazing at saving, may have money squirreled away in multiple places
- May mildly panic when it comes to spending , especially on themselves
Alchemist
- Awesome at seeing possibilities and coming up with ideas
- Has a love/hate relationship with money
- Sees money issues as unfair
- May think that they have to choose between making money and doing something they love
Celebrity
- Great at leading others to thrive
- Enjoy standing out in a crowd
- May spend beyond their means to look and feel important or recognized
- Spending money on things is often a means for protecting oneself from judgment of others
Connector
- Great at creating income through genuine relationships
- Feels overwhelmed by finances and wishes someone would just handle it
- Often feels disempowered about money and may lack independence
- Doesn't really want to know what's going on, hopes it will just get better and doesn't really stress about it
Maverick
- Courageous and rebellious, has awesome tenacity and willing to go for it
- Get's excited at a "get rich quick" possibility
- Can be irresponsible with money, even put themselves in financial jeopardy at the chance of winning a bag
- Great at taking calculated risks, also great at taking poor risks
Nurturer
- Amazing at giving value
- Wonderfully generous, not good at setting boundaries
- Often becomes a magnet for people who need help
- Tends to over-give and then feel resentful
Romantic
- Understands abundance and knows how to appreciate the value of what money buys
- No good at being told "no"
- Tends to blow off shifting behavior around money if it doesn't feel good
- May spend to enjoy the outer world because inner self-worth is not as strong
Ruler
- Amazing at creating a vision and a world where everyone thrives
- A natural leader and natural over-worker
- Rarely takes time to enjoy like in the moment
- Fells like there's never enough, no matter how much they've earned/achieved
Did you resonate with any of the archetype qualities? I’m sure the answer’s yes, since we ALL have beliefs that create our own money archetypes!
Learning about my money archetypes and money mindset work completely shifted my
relationship with money. My Accumulator was always nervous to spend money. She really freaked out when I bought a house and had surprise major expenses!
My Nurturer was terrified to ask for what I was worth. I had a doctorate, decades of experience, and multiple certifications - but I was still hesitant to break out of a structure that wasn’t in alignment with me. She was also afraid of leaving anyone behind.
My Maverick was ready to make a big change but was being held back by the over-giving of my Nurturer and the conservative nature of my Accumulator. No wonder creating change felt so difficult!
Learning the gifts and challenges of my money archetypes and how they work together helped me to create an empowering money mindset that catapulted me toward all kinds of wonderful outcomes. Along with significantly improving my relationship with money, I created a new business structure, started setting boundaries with myself and others, and began a better balance between work and leisure time.
You can use the archetype qualities you read about here to inspire some thoughts about your relationship with money - and everything else. Simply apply the same idea to other areas of life!
